“Unsinkable”: New Titanic Movie Review

Dear Reader,

We’re excited to announce the upcoming feature film “UNSINKABLE: Titanic Untold” is coming to theatres soon! The film follows the never before told story of the aftermath of the world’s most famous maritime disaster, the Titanic’s tragic maiden voyage.

Led by Senator William Alden Smith, the US Senate rushes to convene an inquiry in New York, aiming to gather testimony from crucial witnesses. Collaborating with a determined investigative journalist, Sen. Smith seeks to uncover the truth behind the Titanic’s demise. The film is woven with tales of corruption, political interference set against the backdrop of courage and sacrifice aboard the vessel on that fateful night in April 1912.

The stellar cast includes Cotter Smith (“Mindhunters,” “X-Men-X2”), Fiona Dourif (“True Blood,” “The Blacklist”), Jayne Wisener (“Sweeney Todd,” “The Inbetweeners”), and Karen Allen (“Raiders of the Lost Ark,” “Animal House”).

Directed by Cody Hartman, the production is a collaboration with his father, Brian Hartman, who penned the screenplay and produced the independent film.

Malcolm’s Movie Review

The budget for the new “Unsinkable” movie would probably not even cover James Cameron’s catering costs for his 1997 ‘Titanic’ movie. However, it’s not trying to be a block-buster.

It’s not an action or disaster movie. There are no big sets or impressive CGI.  It’s not a love story either. This is a very different movie from “Titanic” or even the earlier “A Night To Remember”.

Other movies about the ill-fated Titanic end when the ship sinks. This one starts. It is essentially a courtroom drama. It is about the aftermath of Titanic’s loss: the US senate inquiry.

This is argueable the most important part of the Titanic story and gave birth to the moden maritime safety regulations: SOLAS (Saving Lives at Sea).

Cotter Smith, who plays Senitor Smith, is very commanding. I also enjoyed the actor who played Bruce Ismay being nervous under questioning.

Cameron’s brilliant ‘Titanic’ managed to have wide appeal to viewers who had no interest in ships or maritime history. Unsinkable is good, but a slow paced and very thoughtful movie. It is a movie for those seriously interested in the ‘real’ Titanic story and how it changed history and as a result, maritime safety.

The movie is NOT on general release. It is showing in selected UK (some VUE cinemas) and US cinemas. Hopefully, it will also appear shortly on UK/US streaming services and later on DVD.

TV – DVDs

On the subject of DVDs, I can recommend two TV drama series: The first is “Titanic” written by Julian Fellows (Downton Abbey etc.) It is a sort of ‘Downton’ at sea and looks at the crew onboard serving the rich.

The second is “Titanic: Blood & Steel”. This one looks at the designer and the men the actually built the ship, with much hardship and unrest.

Both were released in 2012 and are available for purchase from Amazon etc. I’m not sure if anybody ‘streams’ them (pay per view).
